Welcome Members of the New York Press Association
Your work as journalists, editors, photographers, designers, and media professionals shapes the heartbeat of our communities. From the bustling streets of New York City to the quaint downtown hubs of upstate cities, towns and villages, you are the ones who bring the stories of our neighborhoods to life. You capture the triumphs, challenges, and everyday moments that define who we are.
Today, we invite you to take a step further—not just to tell the stories of your communities, but to share your stories of the remarkable people behind the news through Hometown Storytellers, a new initiative from Pathways to Equity, the nonprofit parent of the Ithaca Times and its five smaller rural publications.
Introducing Hometown Storytellers
Hometown Storytellers is a weekly series of essays designed to shine a spotlight on the talented individuals who make local news possible. From writers crafting compelling narratives to photographers capturing the perfect shot, from editors refining every detail to administrators keeping the newsroom running, every role matters. This series celebrates the full spectrum of talent in your newsroom—writers, editors, photographers, copy proofers, publishers, graphic designers, bookkeepers, and more. Each essay, approximately 750 words in length -, will focus on one team member, written by a colleague and accompanied by a photograph of the person being showcased. These stories will be shared on our dedicated online platform (in-development), www.hometownstorytellers.com, to honor the faces behind the news and foster deeper connections within newsrooms and with readers.
Why Hometown Storytellers Matters
Local news is the lifeblood of our communities, and you, the members of the New York Press Association, are its stewards. Your dedication ensures that readers and listeners stay informed about what’s happening, when it’s happening, and why it matters. But too often, the people behind the bylines, the mastheads, and the layouts remain unseen. Hometown Storytellers changes that by giving you a platform to celebrate your colleagues and share their journeys with your audience.
Our Hometown Storytellers initiative has two core goals:
1. Building Stronger Newsroom Bonds: By writing about each other, team members will learn more about their colleagues’ passions, challenges, and contributions. A suggested “buddy system” encourages pairs to interview one another, fostering collaboration and camaraderie. These essays will pass through your editor for feedback before being sent to our platform moderator for final approval, ensuring a polished and professional product.
2. Connecting with Your Audience: Readers and listeners often see the news as a product, but Hometown Storytellers invites them to see the people behind it. By sharing personal and anecdotal stories—why a photographer is drawn to capturing community events, how an editor balances deadlines with creativity, or what inspires a bookkeeper to keep the newsroom’s finances in order—you invite your audience to become friends, not just consumers. They’ll see their lives reflected in yours, creating a deeper, more meaningful connection.
How It Works
Participating in Hometown Storytellers is simple and flexible, designed to fit into your newsroom’s workflow:
● Pair Up: Encourage team members to pair up and interview each other. This reciprocal approach ensures everyone gets a chance to be celebrated and fosters mutual understanding.
● Write the Essay: Each 750-word essay should highlight the individual’s role, their journey in journalism, and what drives them to serve their community. Include a high-quality photograph of the person being featured.
● Review and Submit: Essays should be reviewed by your newsroom’s editor for feedback and revisions. Once finalized, submit them to our platform moderator for approval.
● Share the Story: Approved essays will be posted on www.hometownstorytellers.com, a standalone website in development dedicated to this initiative. Your newsroom can promote these stories across your own platforms, amplifying their reach and impact.
Hometown Storytellers is designed to be collaborative and low-pressure, allowing your team to showcase its diversity and talent at a pace that works for you. Whether you contribute one essay a month or one a week, every story adds to the tapestry of America’s hometown news.
About Pathways to Equity
Hometown Storytellers is an initiative of Pathways to Equity, the nonprofit parent of the Ithaca Times and its five smaller rural publications: the Ovid Gazette, the Trumansburg Free Press, the Interlaken Review, the News Chronicle, and the Tompkins Independent. Our mission is to strengthen local journalism by fostering equity, collaboration, and community engagement. We believe that by celebrating the people who bring the news to life, we can deepen the trust and connection between newsrooms and the communities they serve.
Why Your Participation Matters
As members of the New York Press Association, you represent the gold standard of local journalism in our state. Your newsrooms are filled with unsung heroes—people who work tirelessly to inform, inspire, and connect. Hometown Storytellers is an opportunity to honor those contributions while inviting your readers to see the human side of the news. In a time when trust in media is more important than ever, this initiative offers a chance to build bridges, spark conversations, and remind your audience why local news matters.
Imagine a reader in Syracuse picking up their paper and learning about the photographer who’s been capturing their city’s festivals for decades. Picture a listener in Buffalo discovering the editor who stays up late to ensure every story is accurate. These are the stories that make local news not just a service, but a shared experience. By participating, you’ll not only celebrate your team but also inspire other newsrooms across New York and beyond to do the same.
How to Get Involved
We invite every member of the New York Press Association to join Hometown Storytellers. Whether you’re a small weekly paper or a larger daily, your team’s stories matter. To get started or learn more, go to www.HometownStorytellers.com, fill out the short form and register your interest. We will get back to you as soon as possible. Please be patient as this is a new program and we do not know what the response will be.
